The New Paradigm


Wow! I look at my stats and people are actually reading this! This is a brainstroming page for all my thoughts on something I plan to write about the paradigm shift that technology is fostering in our society.

The revolution* will not be televised - it will be blogged, podcast, videocast and mobcast.

*i.e. the revolution to a new paradigm

Introduction


1. When I was a teenage boy at school I remember wondering what the relevance of everything we were learning was. It didn't seem relevant to me (and it's turned out that alot of it wasn't relevant), and I couldn't work out why I was expected to spend all my time cramming my head full of facts/data (memorise) that in the real world I could go to the bookshelf, library and (now - much later) Internet for any info/data I need.

All the HSC proved was that I could study for tests, and I don't think that's a very useful skill in the "real world"!

2. There is a paradigm shift occurring
  • Tools are bringing about change in the way we socialise, communicate, research and gather information, think, teach and learn, collaborate.
  • Made possible(? visible) by the internet and digital media
  • Affecting media (blogging vs journalism, podcasting vs radio), entertainment (file sharing music, movies etc), software (FOSS - Firefox, Open Office), education, knowledge management (libraries, folksonomy).

3. This is about freedom and honouring and respecting the independence and autonomy (and wisdom) of the individual to choose. (Trusting the social mores/etiquettes and developed social rules to maintain order - teachers needing to take on role as conflict resolution experts - just normal social skills).

  • For several thousand dollars anyone can start their own online newspaper, radio show, TV station or music studio and publish/broadcast their content/views etc. to the world.
  • Digital cameras, audio recording gear, video cameras, editing software, blogs.

From Passive Consumer to Creator/Producer/Distributor/Consumer


  • The read/write web
  • Citizen media
  • Citizen journalism & broadcasting
  • Personal media revolution - gap between the professional media and citizen/amateur media is closing. The distinction / dividing line is starting to blur.
  • Amateurisation and democratisation of media
  • Means of production and distribution in hands of citizens
  • Anyone has the technology to create quality content and distribute it globally for little or no cost:
    * Blogging vs. journalism
    * Professional photography vs. digital and moblogging
